What is Christianity?
Simply put, Christianity is a religion based around the teachings of the figure Jesus Christ as told through various scriptures. A Christian is one who follows the teachings of Jesus Christ. Believing in his existence alone does not make one a Christian or a follower of Christ just as believing in the existence of Bigfoot does not make one a follower of Bigfoot. Simply following select parts of Christ's teachings also does not make one a Christian just as following only some of the rules of a sport makes you a cheater, not a follower of the rules. If you just select portions that teach forgiveness and the Golden Rule you are no more a Christian than you are a Muslim which teaches the same values in the Qur'an. Most self proclaimed Christians do not follow most of what Christ teaches but still think they are Christians because they are unaware of what is actually said in the Bible and instead follow a watered down version dictated in Church.

Some historians also use the term "Christians" as a blanket to describe all the followers of all the early Jewish messiah based religions, not just the one focused on the Jewish messiah known as Jesus Christ. On this site we will only refer to the following of the messiah Jesus Christ as Christianity.
A Plea to Christians
All we ask are these two simple things...

1. It is important to acknowledge that your Christianity, though may be helpful & comforting in your life, has consequences for those around you. The Christian Bible talks about beliefs AND states claims, claims which people base real world decisions on such as voting and medical treatment. By just supporting the idea that the Bible is more than a regular book and its claims are inerrant you are making it socially acceptable for people to act upon those claims. Please take the time to learn how/why your Christianity negatively impacts others.
  2. Because your Christianity has a direct impact on others it is important that you support what you say you support with 100% certainty (or as certain as we can be about anything if you want to be technical). Is the Bible really what you believed it to be? Is its god really the god you believe in and love?

The Bible is the most influential and quoted book of our times yet most are unaware of its history, formation, and actual messages. Almost all Christians gain knowledge about the Bible through church, Bible studies, or various Christian groups all of which only focus on particular snippets of the Bible's story to portray a particular agenda or ideal. This leaves so much left unlearned and unknown but as a Christian who desires to seek the truth nothing could be more important than learning the Bible's full story.
•  The Bible is NOT inerrant.

•  Making it socially acceptable to believe it is makes it socially acceptable to attack marriage equality, attack freedom of choice, attack medical research, attack public education, murder children through reliance in faith healing, murder in God's name, censor the public, discriminate, and much much more.
But isn't religion harmless?
Christianity is a religion and religion is essentially harmless, BUT Christianity is also a dogmatic belief system. Dogma is not open to scrutiny, revision, or change and is always harmful for a society. Although many Christians only treat select claims as truth, the claims related to what they are seeking truth on, they still support belief in taking all of the Bible's claims as the inerrant inspired word of a god.
