Why God is needed
Pushing the belief in a personal god by taking advantage of people's wishful thinking and/or emotions allows church leaders to act as a middleman between you and that god. Although your average small church leader is also an innocent victim being taken advantage of, major church leaders have a hefty financial fortune riding on people thinking they need to believe in a god. There is also a great deal of political power and wealth from book sales if you can convince the public that they need to follow your personal god to not only be rewarded but also to be saved from evil and eternal damnation. In truth, the belief in God is only needed for those who profit from taking advantage of believers.
Belief
Why is belief so important? Do you really think God values belief in him above all else as Christianity traditionally claims? According to Christianity, if you don't find enough convincing evidence during your life time to believe in the God of Abraham then you deserve the same fate as a mass murdering rapist. To say that God does not care if you are a kind, honest, charitable and non-selfish person but rather only cares about whether you believe in him or not makes him out to be a selfish tyrant. In reality the ones who value belief and loyalty over acts of kindness are evil tyrants who are selfish enough to take advantage of others.
The perfect gimmick
Why can't God just defeat Satan?
Satan and God are actually both of equal importance to the church leaders and apologists. Without stories of Satan they have nothing to save you from and thus you would not need them to be a middleman to salvation. Have you ever wondered why God can't just defeat Satan and get rid of evil? He is said to be all-powerful and ridding the world of evil would not affect our freewill. The answer is the same reason why the hero character of a comic book can't get rid of his nemesis, because there wouldn't be a story. If God gets rid of evil and defeated Satan then there is no fear, no reason to come to church, no reason to pass around the collection plate, no reason to buy apologetic books, and no more power left in the hands of those who take advantage of believers.
Christianity:
The abusive boyfriend you don't need
A very common trait of a terrible, controlling boy friend is that he will constantly belittle and talk down to his girlfriend. They don't only do this to be jerks but because making a person feel worthless in comparison makes them easier to control. The very thought of knowing there are mentally abusive (usually physical also) and controlling relationships out there should make one sick to the stomach. Vulnerable ladies fall victim to this trap every day, the belittling words are so harsh and convincing that they take it as truth, accept it as life, and become imprisoned in a terrible controlling relationship. The controlling boyfriend convinces her that she needs him and that her life is worthless without him.
People's minds and emotions are frail and easy to take control of, this is the exact same tactic that Christianity uses. Bible stories convince you that you are born a bad person full of "sin" and the only way to be a good person is to worship Jesus and beg for forgiveness. You must give your entire life to Jesus and become part of a controlling and manipulative relationship with him while being convinced he is being kind, loving, and doing you a favor. If you don't, you are threatened with an eternal life of torture and abuse. Christianity is a manipulative and abuse boyfriend that you don't need.
Forgiveness?
Some will vouch for God/Jesus saying that he is such a kind and loving god that he is willing to accept us and forgive us even though we are not worthy. Besides the obviously cruel belittling this brings up another problem, forgiveness. Even if we were guilty of doing something wrong, for the sakes of this Bible based story, what should the requirements of forgiveness be? Traditionally any kind and loving person would give forgiveness to anyone who redeems themselves, who proves they are sorry for what they have done and proved that they mean good. One does not demand that you worship and forfeit your life to them in order to right your wrong. That is not forgiveness, that is submission.
