Belief in HeavenThe teachings of heaven causes people to be far more willing to take their own lives when they truly believe some better is to come. In the summer of 1977, Rev. Jim Jones (an ordained Christian minister) and about 1,000 members of the People's Temple moved to Guyana from San Francisco after an investigation into the church for tax evasion had begun. Rev. Jim Jones named the closed settlement Jonestown after himself. His intention was to create a spiritual and agricultural utopia in the jungle, free from socialist principles. Tragically in 1978 nine hundred and thirteen of his Christian followers were convinced to end their lives in order to escape into a better world in the “afterlife”. A couple tried to resist but most committed suicide willingly as they truly believed the words of their reverend and the biblical story of heaven.
Murder of Abortion DoctorsIn 1985 Michael Bray was convicted for destroying eight women's health care clinics and other properties in the Washington DC area. He is also the author of A Time to Kill, a book offering Christian justification for the murder of abortion providers. On July 29, 1994, Paul Hill murdered John Britton and his clinic escort James Barrett in close range with a shotgun outside of a Florida abortion clinic. In addition to the two murders, Hill seriously wounded Barrett's wife. He was arrested that same day and later sentenced to death by lethal injection. In a statement before his execution, Hill said that he felt no remorse for his actions, and that he expected "a great reward in Heaven".
Northern Ireland
The terrible combination of religion and politics has had deadly consequences for the people of Northern Ireland. Over just the past 30 years 3,600+ killings and assassinations have been taking place in a war between the Catholics and Protestants. They have been killing and torturing each other over this religious war that apparently started because of the building of an Anglican Protestant church in a land mostly populated by Catholics. In a 90% Catholic country divorce is outlawed and women have to travel to England to obtain abortions. In the 1950's, the Irish Republican Army was formed and began a terrorist campaign to force out the non-Catholics. Protestants formed their own military organizations to retaliate.
In 1985, a relatively quiet year, authorities recorded fifty-four assassinations, 148 bombings, 237 shootings, 916 woundings, 522 arrests on terrorism charges, 31 kneecappings (shooting out a person's kneecaps) and 3.3 tons of explosives and weapons seized. All this in a tiny country with a population of 1.5 million people. On August 15, 1998 in Omagh, 500 pounds of explosives shattered the downtown area, killing 29 people and injuring over 100, including children and tourists. Even today, no one has been arrested and this war along with its bloodshed still continues. Power of Belief![]() What causes a terrorist to fly a plane into the World Trade Center? Religion! Just as every Islamic suicide bomber the terrorists on those planes during 9-11 truly thought they would attain martyrdom and the Almighty Allah would reward them with 72 virgins in heaven. From as early as the age of 4 Islamic children are raised to desire death in the name of Allah to be far more glorious than life it’s self.
All though the following incidences are not related to Christian groups they are still eye-opening examples of what happens when a group of people are convinced their religious beliefs are absolute truth. Before you go attacking the beliefs of Islam it is very important to keep in mind that all of these devastating and violent tragedies that are justifiable by the Qur’an are also justifiable by the Christian Bible. The only difference between radical Islam and modern Christianity is that these Muslims follow their scriptures more closely. If Christians follow their scriptures just as closely the following results would be absolutely identical.
