Morals & the Bible

Morality does NOT come from the Bible, despite what many Christians claim, and we should all be very thankful for this. At the time the Bible was written it was on par with what many at the time considered "moral" but through subjective morality we have all come a long way since the time of Abraham. Although the Bible contains a few important life lessons such as the golden rule, "treat others as you would like to be treated," it also contains outdated "morals" that would make any Bible Belt fundamentalist Christian sick to their stomach. The Bible is not and never was our source of morality, if anyone ever suggests otherwise ask them if they support the following morals of the Bible...

Bible Morals

Believe what you are told, don't question

Numbers 16:1-50 - "And the Lord spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying, Separate yourselves from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment . . . And it came to pass, as he had made an end of speaking all these words, that the ground clave asunder that was under them: And the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their houses, and all the men that appertained unto Korah, and all their goods. They, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into the pit, and the earth closed upon them: and they perished from among the congregation . . . and there came out a fire from the Lord, and consumed the two hundred and fifty men that offered incense..."

To make things worse, God also killed the people who thought this was a harsh punishment with a plague.
Role Models of the Bible

Moses

Moses brought forth the commandments that included "Thou shall not kill" but what kind of example does he set for the readers of the Bible. In the book of Numbers chapter 31 God orders Moses to "take vengeance on the Midianites for the Israelites." Moses ordered a thousand men from each of the tribes of Israel to carry out his lord's vengeance. The Israelites killed all the men and captured the Midianite women and children along with all their herds, flocks and goods as they plundered and burnt down the town and surrounding camps. All the captives and spoils were brought back to Moses and Eleazar the priest along with the Israelite assembly. Moses ordered the slaughter of every man, boy, women, or girl with the exception of any little girl who was still a virgin. Those little girls were kept alive so Moses and his soldiers could rape them. Clearly Moses is not a person you want your children to get their morals from. Moses supports mass murder (as long as it is not a fellow Israelite), raping children, stealing, and slavery.

Abraham

Abraham is considered to be the founding father of all three major monotheistic religions. In the 22nd chapter of the book of Genesis God ordered Abraham to make a burnt offering of his only son, that of which he loves dearly, Isaac. Without questioning Abraham willingly accepts the Lord's orders, chops up some firewood and then has his son Isaac carry the wood to the location of the sacrifice. Not only is he all set to kill his own son but he even makes his son carry the wood himself. When Isaac asked, "Father? The fire and wood are here, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?" Abraham simply replied that God himself would provide the lamb for the burnt offering. Once at the right location Abraham built an altar and bound his son on top of it. When he reached out his hand with a knife to slay his son an angel came down from the heavens and told Abraham not to kill his son for it was just a test of faith to the Lord. Abraham was willing to kill his own son in the name of the Lord. Not only is that a terrible example for parental morality but it is also child abuse. One can only imagine how much such an event would traumatize a young child. Some may claim that everything is okay with the story because the Lord was so kind to let Isaac live but this is not always the case as we see in the story Jephthah and his daughter.

Joshua

Can we find any good morals in the book of Joshua chapter 6 from the same story that inspired the pleasant sounding song "Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho"? It appears that the story of Joshua is yet another tale of corrupted morals. Good ol Joshua did not rest until his army utterly destroyed all that was in the city with the edge of a sword including both man and women, young and old with the exception of one female prostitute who gave shelter to their spies. Not even the ox, sheep, or any other animals were left alive and the entire city was burnt to the ground.

Jephthah

The story in Judges 11 has a tragic ending. Jephthah made a vow to the Lord, "If you give the Ammonites into my hands, whatever comes out of the door of my house to meet me when I return in triumph from the Ammonites will be the Lord's, and I will sacrifice it as a burnt offering." Jephthah went over to fight the Ammonites, and God "gave them into his hands" as he devastated twenty towns, slaughtered the Ammonites and came out victorious. When Jephthah returned to his home in Mizpah his daughter came out dancing to the sound of tambourines to greet her father. Although Jephthah felt terrible inside, he made a vow to God and now must kill his only child since she was the first to meet him on his return home. The young girl requested before she is killed that she will be allowed two months to roam the hills and weep with her friends since she will never marry. Her father granted her this one request and then upon her return Jephthah murdered his daughter and only child in the name of God. Unlike the story of Isaac God did not see fit to intervene this time. The innocent young girl was killed at the hands of her own father because of a deal he made that she was not involved with.

Job

According to the Bible there was a righteous man named Job. He was God's favorite and his loyalty was rewarded with wealth and thousands of cattle. Satan bets God that Job only worships him because of the wealth that he has given him. For sakes of a bet God permits Satan to have robbers take away all of Job's possessions and livestock, to destroy his house with a terrible tornado, and to have all of his servants along with his ten beloved children murdered. After all this Job still worships his god but just to be certain the testing continued as God permitted Satan to deprive Job of his health. He was then stricken with the most terrible disease, leprosy. Job however remained firm, did not lose hope in the mercy of God. Job was a faithful servant and passed the test, so God gave Job his health back, gave him more cattle than before and returned his wealth.

If you recall Job's seven sons and three daughters were cruelly murdered during this bet. Job however never got his children back and they remained innocent victims of God's selfish ways. Instead Job later had ten new kids to replace the dead ones, and we are told this was okay. Do parents really want their children reading a story that says they are expendable and all that their parents should care about is worshiping magical man in the sky?
