What is Humanism?

Humanism is a progressive philosophy of life that, without theism and other supernatural beliefs, affirms our ability and responsibility to lead ethical lives of personal fulfillment that aspire to the greater good of humanity.

Humanist ethical system
Humanists hold that ethics are consequential, to be judged by results. This is in contrast to so-called command ethics, in which right and wrong are defined in advance and attributed to divine authority. "No god will save us, we must save ourselves." wrote Paul Kurtz in Humanist Manifesto II (1973). Humanists seek to develop and improve their ethical principles by examining the results they yield in the lives of real men and women.

Can you be a Christian and a Humanist?
Pretty much every Christian is a good person with their heart in the right place, even the fundamentalists who attack marriage equality, freedom of choice, our children's education, and who have committed murder because of a belief in faith healing. Unfortunately for fundamentalist Christians if you base your actions on texts that are not moral then your actions are immoral, even if you have been led to believe the texts were moral and infallible. This is why the Humanist ethical system is so important, it allows us to base our actions on an examination of results rather than simply what we have been told to be true even if it contradicts actual results. Fundamentalist Christians could only be humanistic in their actions if they freed themselves from the doctrine of Christianity.

Fundamentalists are only a small percentage of the people who identify themselves as Christians. The rest are moderate Christians, many of which actively contribute to charities and help others. They credit their charitable actions to the teachings of Christ in accordance with the Bible but are these people really Christians? It is true that the Bible tells us to do some humanistic deeds but on the other hand the Bible also tells us to do a lot of immoral deeds and makes false claims that jeopardize the well being of humanity when taken as truth. Wether these moderate Christians only follow the good parts of the Christ's word in the Bible because they have personally rejected the others for moral reasons or because they are simply unaware of them, the bottom line is that they are not following the teachings of Christ and thus are not really Christians. Although they may still believe that Christ existed they are still not followers of Christ, or "Christians," just as people who believe in Bigfoot are not necessarily followers of Bigfoot.

Moderate Christians who only strive to do what is morally right are not actually Christians. They are simply good people who believe in the existence of the figure Jesus Christ and are influenced by some of his teachings but they are not followers of his teachings. Regardless, as long as they identify themselves as Christians and continue to say they support the following of Christ's teachings then they are still supporting the all the harm that results from fundamentalists who actually do base their actions on the teachings of Christ. Can you be a Humanist and a Christian? The answer is no, as long as one supports non-humanistic doctrine they are supporting non-humanist values but for most Christians being a humanist is as simple as accepting that they are not Christians and do not believe in the word of Christ.
