When Galileo discovered that the earth orbited around the sun he was put under house arrest by the Catholic Church because his claims contradicted a few humdrum Bible verses. 150 years ago a new discovery was made which contradicts the Bible's crucial story about the origin of life & sin. Church leaders no longer have the power to arrest anyone so they and Christian apologists have resorted to other means to silence the truth. Their new tactics involve demonizing the subject of evolution, propagating false claims about evolution and scientists, and forcing a pseudoscience dubbed "Intelligent Design" into public classrooms to replace real science.

The Consequences
Science-based technologies have improved living standards, public welfare, health, and security but the suppressing of scientific knowledge leads to a scientifically illiterate nation and hinders human progress. Evolution is the critical foundation of biomedical and life sciences, helping students learn about and understand the scientific evidence, mechanisms, and implications of evolution are fundamental to education and to an improved quality of living. ID in the Classrooms
Wouldn't It Be Fair?
ID proponents are taking advantage of people's desire to be fair. They say it's only fair to teach their side also but would that really be fair? Every other idea, before it gets considered for school curriculum or textbooks, has to fight its way through the tedious criticism and analysis of the scientific process. ID wish to be exempt from such standards, what's fair about that? This is bad in terms of scientific polices and even worse in terms of educational policy. If ID'ers honestly cared about being "fair" the would also be pushing to get all creation myths taught in the classroom.

"Teach the Controversy" is strictly a campaign by Discovery Institute to promote ID and discredit evolution in public high schools. In reality there is no scientific controversy regarding the validity of evolution. Over 99.9% of scientists accept evolution as a solid fact and discard ID as mere pseudoscience. The controversy exists solely in terms of religion and politics.

If we were to give "equal time" for Intelligent Design in the science classroom we would also have to give equal time for all pseudoscience (fake science). Should we give equal time for Chemistry AND Alchemy, Physics AND Magic, Neurology AND Phrenology, or Astronomy AND Astrology?

Creation claims a supernatural being created life, Intelligent Design (ID) is the assumption that since life looks designed, a supernatural being created it. Creationism trying to sound scientific + an ignorance of science = Intelligent Design. Plain and simple.
Is Life Designed? Yes, BUT not by a conscious designer. Obvious life was not formed by random chance, rather life was designed through a natural process known as Natural Selection. Is ID Science? NO. Science explains HOW something happened or HOW something works. Neither Intelligent Design nor Creationism even makes an attempt to explain how life was created or designed. The claim that something was designed or created is an event and falls into the category of history. If ID were true it would be historical event, not a scientific explanation. Intelligent Design did not come about because of any scientific evidence from a research lab, it actually came about because of a court ruling. The 1987 ruling of the United States Supreme Court stated that the teaching of Creationism in science class was a violation of the Establishment Clause (prohibits a state's aid to religion) and the First Amendment. Because Creationism was banned from science rooms, Christian apologists renamed "Creationism" into "Intelligent Design." To make creationism look less religious they reworded it so it no longer specifies who the creator/designer is (however all ID'ers say it's their God) and says life must have a creator because it looks designed, as apposed to "because the Bible says so." The first publication on Intelligent Design was a book titled "Of Pandas and People." You can see the evolution from Creationism to Intelligent Design just by looking at the rough drafts of this book. Immediately after the 1987 court ruling all mentioning of a "Creation" or "Creator" were replaced with the words Intelligent Design" and "agency." The sloppy attempts to disguise Creationism as ID even lead to the books popular and comical phrase, "cdesign proponentsists." Did You Know?
Isaac Newton only invoked an intelligent designer when talking about biology, a subject he knew very little about. Historically ID has only found a home with those who had a lack of knowledge about the subject at hand.
