Wars in the Name of Atheism?
|
The Christian Church, in attempts to cover their own violent history, makes the claim that more bloodshed has been caused in the name of atheism. They commonly refer to the wars led by Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, and Mao Zedong. First off, Hitler was a devoted Christian, but the other two were indeed atheists. However, just because they both were not theists does not mean they went to war because of their lack of belief in a god. All three of them had black hair, did having black hair lead them to war? No. To say that any blood has been shed in the name of atheism is just pure ignorance and dishonesty. Atheism is nothing more than the lack of belief in a god, no one does something because of their lack of belief in something but rather based upon what one does believe in.
What we really need to look at is why people do the things they do. Zedong fought for political reasons and Stalin murdered millions because he owned Russia and could dispose of its people how he wished. As for Hitler he killed Jews in the name of Jesus Christ. The Crusaders killed many Jews & Muslims because they thought it was the will of God. |
Religious afterlife promises are also responsible making people willing to risk their lives in a major war. The Muslims who rammed their planes into the Twin Towers truly thought they would be rewarded with 72 virgins in Heaven. Being promised an eternal life in Heaven/Paradise belittles the value of life in this word.
Most wars are causes by systems of belief that do not allow independent thought and demands appeal to authority. Both communism and dogmatic religions share these demands. The Christian church may claim their god is a god of love and without his guidance one will fall victim to evil ways. However the Bible depicts it's god as a violent and vengeful god of war. Violence can easily be and has been justified by the holy scriptures of Islam, Judaism AND Christianity. |
