What is an Atheist?

'Theist' is one with a belief in a god(s). The prefix 'a' means no or without. An atheist is simply one without a belief in a god or gods.

That's it, that's all the word means. Atheism does NOT deny the possibility of a god. Any other belief, opinion or world view that an atheist has is strictly related to that individual and not atheism.

How is not believing different from denying?

Here is an example. Do you truly believe that there is a tall Asian man named Tom with glasses inside of the Empire State Building this very second? Probably not, there is no evidence or reason for you to assume that is true. You probably also wouldn't deny the possibility of such a man being in that building either. Atheism is being open to possibilities without basing truth on assumptions.

Why is there a label for non-theists?

There is not a name for people who don't believe in the existence of aliens, big foot, the Easter bunny or any other unproven story. It seems rather pointless for a name to be given to those who don't believe in a personal sky god either. Unfortunately these people are being attacked, discriminated against and losing their freedom because of their lack of belief in a supernatural deity. This is why people need to label themselves as atheists, so they can be recognized and stand up against the opposition. By labeling yourself as an atheist you are telling others it is ok to be a non-theist.

What is an Agnostic?

Agnosticism is about knowledge, NOT belief like atheism. It means without knowledge in reference to the existence of a god. An Agnostic is one who claims there is no knowledge of a god and there never will be. All agnostics are also atheists because one who has no knowledge of a god has no reason to believe in a god.

Godless World View

Without a belief in a personal god natural disasters and diseases are no longer a mystery and we become able to help save future victims. No personal god means we must take responsibility to protect the world and each other. With no promise of eternity we must treasure the life we have and make it the best life we possibly can.

Actively Outspoken Atheists

If atheism is nothing more than not believing in a god then why are so many people actively outspoken about their atheism? Actively outspoken atheists are not outspoken because of atheism but rather the problems attached to theism, the belief in a god, particularly when it is a dogmatic belief. Typically all actively outspoken atheists are also humanists and speak out because of their humanistic believes. There are many reasons to speak up against theism.

Attacking Christians?

Many Christians want to know why atheists are making attacks on their religion. It is very important to realize that atheists are NOT attacking, they are fighting back. The religious right has been attacking everything from the medical field and educational system to our individual freedoms and the United States Constitution. Atheist Violence?

Christians, in attempts to cover up their own violent history, make the claim that more bloodshed has been caused in the name of atheism. They commonly refer to the wars led by Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, and Mao Zedong. First off, Hitler was a devoted Christian, but the other two were indeed atheists. However, just because they both were not theists does not mean they did war because of their lack of belief in a personal god. All three of them had black hair in common, did having black hair lead them to war? No.

What we really need to look at is why people do the things they do. Zedong fought for political reasons and Stalin murdered millions because he owned Russia and felt he could dispose of its people how he wished.

Is Atheism a Religion?

Many Christian apologists try to claim that atheism is just another religion in attempts to turn people away from listening to non-theist reasoning. However this claim is heavily flawed since, as mentioned, atheism is absolutely nothing more than the lack of a belief in a god. Atheism contains no teachings or even beliefs to form a religion around.
