The Bible tells us that it is God's will for us to be fertile & multiply and not to waste our "seeds" which cannot be done if we use condoms or birth control.

The Bible also tells us that women will be saved through childbearing, thus condom use or birth control prevents a woman from being saved.

AIDS

South Africa is in the midst of an AIDS epidemic and 5.3 million people are infected with HIV. 25% of all the pregnant women have tested positive for the virus. A common image burnt into the eyes of Africa is a young woman between the ages of eighteen and thirty wheeled or dragged into a hospital by a family member. Typically the patient is delirious, her limbs look like desiccated twigs and she is typically the mother of several children who look to her for support. Sadly she will not live long enough to see any of her children grow as AIDS has proven extremely fatal in Africa.

Christ based religious groups around the world are seizing this opportunity to act like helpful supporters of the victims as means of pushing their religion on others. The Catholic Church is one of the most active religious groups in Africa but their attempts to help is being drastically over shadowed by the damage they are causing. The churches try to fight the spread of infections through teachings of sexual morality such as preventing premarital sex. The reality though is that a married woman living in South Africa is at higher risk of becoming infected with HIV than an unmarried woman. The big problem is that the Catholic Church condemns the practice and teaching of protected sex which only increases the risks and suffering. Catholics commonly consider the use of condoms to be a sinful act and in this particular country the only representation of condom use is that of the catholic ministry. Because of the lack of protection millions of Africans are dying each year of aids, the time for respecting religious believes has long past. A BBC program interviewed a Catholic woman in Uganda who has chosen to sleep unprotect with her infected husband. "We won't go to heaven if we use condoms," she explains. Asked if the woman made the right choice the Archbishop of Kampala, Cardinal Emmanuel Wamala, replies: "If it is wrong to use the condom, then she has made the right choice." When asked even if it costs her her life the Cardinal replied "Yes."

Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)

The Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted disease in the United States. The virus infects over half the American population and causes nearly five thousand women to die each year from cervical cancer. The Centers for Disease Control estimates that HPV causes more than two hundred thousand to die worldwide each year. Thanks to medical breakthroughs we now have a vaccine for HPV that appears to be both safe and effective. The vaccine produced 100 percent immunity in the six thousand women who received it as part of a clinical trial. Despite all those who continue to die from HPV the Christian conservatives in the US government have resisted a vaccination program based purely on their personal religious beliefs.

Due to verses like 1 Corinthians 7:1-2 the Christian church is heavily against premarital sex and they are convinced that curing the sexually transmitted disease HPV will tell girls it is okay to have premarital sex. There is nothing wrong with encouraging teens to abstain from having premarital sex but preserving a life threatening cancer for the sake of an incentive toward abstinence is beyond morally disturbing. Christian conservatives willingly sacrifice the lives of thousands of women each year in the name of their Christian faith. Not all Christians pick the same side on this topic but they all support the same book which is used to justify the decisions of these conservative Christians in the higher ranks of governmental power.
